An Affiliate of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte Vol. 40, No. 1 Tevet-Shevat 5778 January 2018 lsrael@70 Celebrations Continue on January 25 Featuring Israeli Story An Unforgettable Blend of Storytelling, Live Music, and Dazzling Visuals Join us as we mark 70 years of statehood by exploring Israel’s ex traordinary people, eulture, his tory, and polities. Speakers, performers, artists, and eelebra- tions will showease the eomplex- ity and diversity of eontemporary Israel in a series of programs de signed to entertain, edueate, and inspire. We look forward to eele- brating Israel’s 70th birthday with you. The number 70 has always been important throughout Jewish tradition. When Jaeob’s family went down to Egypt, they num bered “seventy souls.” Moses was eommanded to appoint 70 elders to help him govern Israel. The Midrash tells us that Torah is so wonderfully multifaeeted as to have 70 “faees.” After the Tower of Babel, humankind separated into 70 nations, eaeh with their own language. 70, then, has a long history of exemplifying both the unity and the diversity of the Jew ish experience. And now, we’re thrilled to mark Israel’s 70th birth day, a speeial oeeasion for the global Jewish eommunity to re- joiee in 70 years of independenee, vitality, strength, and innovation. To eelebrate, we have a full eal- endar of events for our entire eommunity in store for you. Join us for the most fun, exeiting, and thought-provoking Israel pro gramming of the year. Keynote Speaker Ambassador Dan Shapiro spoke at length about his experienee as the U.S. Ambas sador to Israel from May of 2011 until the end of the Obama Ad ministration in January of 2017.
